San Jose State University Center Competitions

Center Competitions serve to give students opportunities outside of MESA Day to explore their curiosity and creativity.

 

Stick Together (Middle School)

LEVEL: Middle School

DIVISION(S): Grades 6th and Grades 7th/8th

COMPOSITION OF TEAM: 2-3 of Students per team

OVERVIEW: Students will use math and science to implement engineering concepts in the desig and construction of a model bridge from your own plans that will carry a maximum load while using as few craft sticks as possible; stressing neatness, craftsmanship, and creativity.

Civil Structures (High School)

LEVEL: High School

DIVISION(S): Grades 9th/10th and Grades 11th/12th

COMPOSITION OF TEAM: 2-3 of Students per team

OVERVIEW: Students will design and construct a model balsa wood bridge from their own plans that will carry a maximum load while using as little wood as possible, stressing neatness, craftsmanship, and creativity. Participation logistics, limits, and competition facilities may vary by host site. Advisors and students are responsible for verifying this information with their center director. This competition does not advance to the regional level.

Overall Bridges is our most popular Competition and continues to draw our students in!

College Poster Board Competition

Students will be exposed to college opportunities by researching their college choice(UC/CSU/Private/Out of State.) It’s important for students to be able to understand college requirements, college majors, college life, and college financial assistance. MESA’s mission is to expose underrepresented students in the UC/CSU systems to all the benefits a college education can provide.

COMPOSITION OF TEAM: 2-3 students per team

Both Middle and High School Level Share the Same Rules.
